Here's mine, using a little sewing machine motor, gets hot but it works pretty good.

The real trouble is it has no optical tracking and the inertia of the gap is a lot for this little motor so regulation is not really possible. This would need a PID controller to maintain speed properly.
That is a nice little rsg. I have a little sewing machine motor, about the same size, but the problem is that it does not have a screw shaft, and i cannot think of anything to make it work but a few pulleys. But it does have a flat milled onto the shaft. Sears kenmore, 25/60hz(says cycles, but same freaking thing) and 1.2 amps. It runs with ac/dc cause it is universal motor. I say all this, cause i am wondering if it is anything like yours. If so i might get some small pulleys and bearings and something to clamp the bearings down and make a nice little arsg. Since it is universal, i can adjust speed with variable voltage, or PWM easily.

You order the shaft adapter .. an arbor.. from Grainger or McMaster Carr. The only trouble with this is that the washers you get with the arbor kit usually are not symmetrical or flat enough, so you have to make adjustments until the arbor and your disks are perpendicular. Other then that it works pretty well.

The rotary is mounted vertically to keep the motor from plunging in and out as much as it would in horizontal position, that way you can close the gap further. It also allows more storage space on the base of the TC, an extra bonus if you need to situate more NST's.

I came up with soldering the pipe nipples onto a pcb and gapping them, but adjusting it is tricky and I gave that up a while ago. I liked it's style better then the drawer pulls, but that's how it goes sometimes.

The gap works pretty well at about 65V from a variac, that's the approximate sync voltage, but bare in mind I haven't had a chance to strobe tach it yet, the strobe needs fixing.

I have thrown tungsten once so far, but that's because an upper set screw loosened, so care must be taken with this stuff still. Plastic disk would not have survived in my opinion because not only did the flying electrode chip the end off the tungsten rod.... it literally bent the electrode! There's a lot of force in those flying electrodes and if the disk cracks or gets out of balance for only an instant, the inertia will tear itself apart and cause an explosion. I really wouldn't go for plastic, go for something that's reinforced.
