Humz I just blew a ferrite core in my boost converter don't know how it happened yet but I was surprised to find the core scattered over my desk in fragment. Too bad there isn't much to see just a shattered core.

FWIW, I have a Samsung R74-series 40" LCD TV that has an identical standard failure mode in its SMPS - I just re-capped it with decent Panasonic caps and its fine now (lots of forums discussed this).

The annoying thing is that Samsung are generally regarded as a very good quality make, and even they had problems with this (my TV dates from early 2006, so probably made in late 2005).
