You could wind a single primary around both cores instead of using separate drivers, so you only have one driver to tune.

Where did you put the cap? Across the gate and 12v and it overloaded the 555. But a capacitor Right at the negative on the mosfet and to the positive should not have blown the 555, that would not make any sense. It should go from pin 3 on the mosfet and to the 12v node.
