More voltage is better, 24v is probably a good balance of power and sanity to start with. Ive done about 90v into a ZVS before with beautiful results tho. I would go ahead and use 18 awg or so for the primary and secondary, but that's just me. Maybe i just don't like the fact that the sharp, abrasive edges of a ferrite core tend to damage magnet wire insulation.

the highest i have gotten with a fly back was 36v and i was happy at least 2 or 3 inches when drawn. cheesey

1-2 cm is not 2-4 kV. Between points it's more like 10-20 kV. With a normal flyback from a small TV or monitor you will not get much more than this.

oh, ok. well i will see if i can get an bigger one.

Anyway while i have you all, i have an oscilloscope but it only goes up to 200 volts like most.. Know of a way/something i can get that will allow me to measure 2-10kv? something cheep :P

You can make a resistor divider from many cheap resistors and a cheap multimeter. I wouldn't suggest trying to mesure AC with it though because of lots of stray capacitance.

Voltage dividers using 10M resistors is easy, but only when you are trying to measure DC. Once you get into AC, especially at higher frequencies, it tends to go to crap.

Link2 is a nice little design, key point to note that since it uses resistors and its such a long chain, you not only introduce stray capacitance, but depending on the type of resistor you might even introduce stray capacitance (say if you use 10M wirewound resistors).

If you really need to view HV AC waveforms: Link2 might be an option...

Ok, well i wound it with 16 gauge wire 4 times, and used hot glue to prevent the arking from the terminals. It seems to make it a bit better, I will try with a biger powersupply tomorow.

Ok well i hooked it up to a biger power supply, however i am occasionaly geting huge arks between two pins (not even next to each other) i have hot glued them but it did not work too well.

I think you didn't figure the ground pin right then, try bringing the HV wire close to the bottom of the flyback you'll see the pin it wants to arc to the most.

There is a ground pin connected to the high-voltage coil, and usually some others that are the ground terminals of one or two potentiometers connected to the high-voltage terminal and a of filter capacitor. These must be grounded too or very well insulated, or will spark.
