Hello, i bought the BTC40 tesla coil from info unlimited Link2 as my first ever tesla coil kit. When i bought it i had hoped to hook it up to a keyboard (piano type) to play music. Not until after i bought it did i learn that this model, due to the spark gap, was unable to do so. I was wondering what i would have to do in order to be able to hook it up to a keyboard. New spark gap? or is it even possible?

Im pretty sure that the only kind of coils that have music interface (keyboard etc) are solid state tesla coils and their like, not spark gap tesla coils sad

Ummmm, you should read up for a long time before you try anything. I am not being mean, but if you read up you will learn that you could not make a tesla coil like that sing, and you will also know that a solid state tesla coil does not use any high voltage transformers or capacitors (at least not a capacitor quite like that). You would have to learn ALOT before you can even attempt a solid state tesla coil.

If you still want to go and buy a tesla coil that can play music from a keyboard etc. i suggest you buying a miniBrute drsstc kit from Link2 and then a XenoSonic audio modulator interface. Of corse there are many other ways thay one can build a musical drsstc but you will need a good amount of electronics experience before you can attempt to build something like that from scratch.

1) Plug coil into Clapper(tm)
2) Duct-tape headphones to Clapper(tm)
3) Plug headphones into keyboard
4) Set keyboard to percussion
5) Crank up volume on keyboard
6) Go to town

Of course, the coil output will be all syncopated and weird, but it wouldn't be cool if it sounded like everybody else's wink

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

What would you recommend i read. I'm in this for the learning, but ive been having trouble finding good info. The best thing ive had so far was the plans that came with the BTC40.
