Yes you would. It is the only way to view the waveform coming from the oscillator chip.

You can also find out the waveform by looking at the hookup of the oscillator and determine if the output would be a square or sawtooth waveform...

Square waves ?

flybacks are actually run using sawtooth waves in a tv.

And in a ZVS driver arent thay run on a sine wave to stop the core getting saturated ?

The reason that the flyback is getting hot is because he is pumping so much power into it and at a low freq, 7-14khz, and maybe the fact that there is no current feedback in this circuit to change the duty cycle according to the arc lenght ect.. I dont think it has much to do with the waveform.

Maybe more people should read this thread

and they wont be suprised when there '555 flyback driver' isnt working properly cheesey

Yea,square waves is what the 555 driver and most others use. I don't know how they are run in tv's but i know that squarewave is a good thing to use :P. I am pretty sure that the reason the flyback heats up so much is because it is the wrong waveform though, i mean he is not pumping large amounts of power out of it.

Also, yea i think ZVS is sinewave but wtf do i know? I can't even pump more that 30 watts out of it :P.

Just try to make your own driver with a simple 555 oscillator or an easier one is just the single transistor driver.
