I have and so have a few coiler frends, so why take the chance? rolleyes

Cat5 is definitely easier and more convenient but I think it's just sort of misleading to say magnet wire is going to fail no matter what or that its totally shitty. I use them both smile

I use cat 5 just for the simple reason that it is very easy to identify the windings.

I've connected up my new GDTs as you can see. They seem to function a bit better than the old ones, though still nothing too exceptional, the output is an arc of at the best 45mm.

Could it be that my discharge terminal is poorly designed and is preventing corona discharge? I removed the small ball and this left a thread rod which i wound a thin copper wire onto and managed to get a very small amount of corona discharge, not as much as I'd expect.

May It also be that I'm not connecting my circuit up correctly?

What are your waveforms like on either side of the GDT?

What kind of cores are you using? If they are iron powder then they will not work well. They have to be ferrite with at least 5000 permability.

The waveforms are really terrible, the output from the PWM chip seems to be pretty decent though.

My core material is ferrite but is type 77 material which only has a permeability of 2000. I used this because it was reccommended.

There could be an issue with some of the driver chips, I had replaced two of them through failure this afternoon. [Mine own fault here I think]

I'm too lazy to read all properly, but as I see the wave forms I have few, maybe relevant, questions - what is your core made of? Where did yo get it? Are you sure it is designed for HF use?
You should send also the wave forms of the GDT drive output without load...

BTW: regarding the proper wire for GDT discussion - I'm using the shielded wires from VGA cable from computer monitor. I use the shielding as the primary... It works great and is very easy to get ;)

One more thing: Your topload looks very nice, but I'm affraid that the ring is too fat for producing a proper corona-like discharge...

I think that your DC blocking cap in series with the gdt is too small or otherwise bad.

One thing to try is connecting your scope directly across the output of the driver chips, that should look like a very clean square wave.
