Hi all.

Has anyone seen the news? seems that this hurricane is over 1000 miles across.

Looks a bit like the storms of "The Day after Tomorrow" but this is RL

Just hope that they got everyone out in time, I doubt anyone could survive that.

Ultra7 and JimG look like they are directly in the path of this beast, hope they make it though this storm OK.

Thats probably a little exaggerated. It made landfall as a category 2, not that you'd be able to tell from the media reports. Gustav was a good bit stronger when it came ashore. Early damage reports are encouraging, and it looks like the storm surge was the primary problem.

As far as thats concerned, that area is a bad place for a storm to come ashore due to the extensive near shore development and the distance that the near sea level elevations extend inland.

Its large diameter actually is an advantage to those in the path, as it creates a larger, but less intense wind field for a given barometric pressure.

This storm exhibited a number of characteristics of a category 4 storm throughout its trip through the gulf, while only holding on to category 2 wind speeds.

It's pretty bad.
We have been without water or power since about 12:30AM Saturday morning.
Cell phones are locked out to "Emergency only" calling, land lines are down as well.
My house lost a tree to the wind, it ended up on the neighbors house.
We lost the fence, and some siding on the house, but I had plywood in the garage and fixed it as soon as the wind died down a bit.
Then to stack it all up, thunderstorms hit us about 4AM this morning, and have flooded my neighborhood.
The water level was roughly 5 feet away from my front door this morning as I left for work, and the rains are still falling. I was reluctant to leave my family there, but Mandi has an SUV that sits about 2.5 feet off the ground, and 4wd, and the country-girl attitude and know how as to be able to use it, 7 months pregnant and all.
I'm on emergency pole line restoration, and do not expect to see my home for the next 3 days at least.
I haven't been dry since Friday, at least not for any length of measurable time.
As bad as it was, it could have been worse.
Say a prayer for Ms. Mandi and my kids, and hope that they left the house before the water level came up into the house, if you have a religion. If not, then at least watch some weather channel.

My only connection to the outside world is my Sprint air card, the XM Radio, and my laptop.

I'll check in as I find connectivity.

Ike says hi from Pittsburgh. We're getting alot of wind, but not too much rain. It was quite beautiful this evening before the rain and high winds hit. The trees are waving nicely.

Edit: Just had our first brown out and the gusts are pushing 50 at least. I have a feeling we are going to lose power sometime tonight. I just wonder what its like over in Ohio and Illinois.

Here in Ohio the wind picked up around 6:30 and some gusts hit 65-70mph. There were a couple brown outs but nothing serious and a big branch fell on our patio and crushed the wood furniture dead but other than that there was almost no rain at all and it has moved out of the area now. On the other hand and this is kind of sad, I received a email this morning from arcstarter saying that his home in texas was almost completely ruined. All the walls were warped out and waterlogged, there were no shingles on the roof and everything was flooded. He says that alot of his stuff got ruined and he is in a motel right now and will not be back for at least 4 weeks. Again if you are religion please say a little prayer for him that hoping everything will be all right.

Strangely enough in Toronto (or rather a city right next to Toronto) up in Canada I've had crazy winds today. A big (2-2.5 story tall?) plaza sign got blown over and nearly landed on my housemate.

Global climate change sucks. I liked everything the way it was 15 years ago -.-

We got 20 straight hours of heavy rain in northern Indiana starting Saturday evening. We couldn't even get out of our subdivision last night because roads in every direction were flooded. My house is on a hill, but I still had several inches of standing water in the yard, and my sump pump was running every 30 seconds - I'm amazed the switch held up to that.
