Classical Spark Gap Tesla Coil

Hi there.

I have built a classical spark gap coil, using a 12v power supply and seeing how efficient I can get it.

The Dimensions.

---

The power supply is DC 12v @ 6a 72 watts

The frequency generator pulsing the Tesla Coil provides 10khz to a flyback transformer.
Two Induction Chokes filter it.

The capacitor bank consists of four rows in parallel, 6 capacitors each.

The spark gap is a static multi spark gap set at 5mm; I cannot set it further because arches start on my capacitors.
There are four gaps, three in use.

The primary coil is 9.5 turns of copper tubing.
It is 13” in diameter.

The secondary coil is 21.5” high 4.5”wide made of .4mm wire 1000 turns.

I am using no torroid capacitor, just a breakout.

The whole coil is grounded to its metal housing.

Spark length is just over 5”.

At 72 watts that is quite efficient for a classical Tesla Coil.

I just want to know if you have any comments or suggestions.

Thank you, Plasma.

Nicely done, but that secondary is way to large for such little input power, either up your supply or try with a smaller secondary.

with a flyback driven sgtc ive had 4" sparks from a secondary only 2.5"x5"

Thank you..

I am planning on upping my power input.

I have 2A 480watt variac, I Just don't have a Xformer to go accordingly.

I have upped my spark length to 7" by making a bigger spark gap.
But my capacitors are making some expensive sounds.

But I am very happy with the efficiency.

Thanks!

That's a really good looking coil you have there. If you want bigger sparks the next step is a 12kv 30mA transformer and you should get 18" of sparks from that.

hmm, you are going to need a massive flyback or go with paralleled car ignition xmfrs.
