Hi guys, Got my SSTC working with help from all of you, but its developed a problem, the IRFP450's shorted out after a while, i wasnt "pushing" the coil, it was well within operating limits (designed for 110VAC, i was running it between 90-100VAC) , so my question is this, i have four IRFP460's , can i double up on the output stage, it currently uses 2 >> see here>> http://4hv.org/e107_plugins/forum/ forum_viewtopic.php?3804 , can i mod the circuit so i can use four IRFP's to help it handle current better? the gate circuit uses 15v zeners, are these absolutlely neccesary as i dont have any more?

thanks in advance

You need zenners on gates to protect them
You can parallel the FETs, each gate with its own resistor for ringing suppresion. Keep the connections short, and equally shared by each FET.

IRFP450s are just dissapointing if your looking for "fun" output. cheesey

Use an interruptor and keep their on times really low...

Ok i see it now. What i would do,have done before, is pop out that 555 and make an interruptor. Pulse the enable pins on your gate drive chips(if they have them) are they ucc37321/ucc37322?Enable is pin 3 on them.

An interruptor is basically a 555(most common) running as an oscillator. You adjust its freq and duty cycle via external pots. This limits how long your transistors can stay on for ect.

Even with an interrupter, the FETs can blow if you draw short arcs too ground. Consider increasing the primary turns a bit to add more safety load for your FETs. I poped some 460 FETs with a 4-6 turns primary, but never did with 10 turns.

How many primary turns are you running? I used to use IRFP450's and they really are kinda weak.
And they _hate_ being run CW.
also, my halfbridge throws all the toys out of the pram at about 140+V.
