Yes, halfwave rectification is a problem with SLR. You must use fullwave (bridge) rectification with an SLR transformer. Read the failures section of Steve's SLR inverter. The first one shows an exploded IGBT from "(foolishly) operating with a half-wave rectifier on the output of the transformer."

You need to load the output the same on both halfwaves, so yes if you're using any rectification it must be fullwave one (bridge rectifier/fullwave doubler).
