To Coillah: aha, thanks, fine result! In the near future I shall try to test a way with a usual smoothly adjustable drill. By the way, not so long ago, somewhere at a forum I have seen very class machine tool which was completely automatic. It has deeply amazed me.

On the account of varnishes: I used two types of varnishes (Urethane an aerosol and a varnish for yachts). Both showed excellent result, but terribly smelly. It is better to varnish under a canopy on open air. Except for secondary, I have in addition varnished MMC for reception of more stable parameters at change of humidity of air.

I wish you successful start!

OK the cap bank is built. My SG will be a static. More to come on that.

The MMC choosen uses 20 of the above listed caps, to form a 7.5nF cap with 40kV rating.

I used a resonant value for the capacitor because as I understood it from multiple sources that's ok with a static spark gap. Deep Fried Neon and a few users on these forums suggested it was ok.

Here are some MMC Pics

Corona are you implying that my capacitor value is not LTR for a static gap?

I used TeslaMap to get the value.

I misread the other post. (but thanks for looking out ^^ )

7.5nF - 8nF is fine as LTR for your transformer.
I didn't calculate when you wrote that, I just went by you saying that you used a resonant
value for your capacitor.
5.3nF is resonant
1.5 x 5.3 is 7.96nF
I think what you have there is just fine. Good work.

actually, right a little over capacitance isn't going to cause much problem at all. 5.3nF is resonant but 7.96nF will work just fine. You may find your output is starting smaller sparks then grow a little after the coil has been on for bit. I usually run a little over capacitance as getting exactly the capacitance can be tricky. I have been up to 12-13nF over capacitance on my newer coil.. but it allows me to run more xmfrs with having to change the capacitance. currently I am set up for 300mA @ 12kv yet i run only 240mA through it.

Update:

Ok so I have been testing my NST by attaching coat hanger wires to the terminals to form a jacob's ladder. When I did this the first time, the transformer would create a good arc continuously. Now it makes maybe one or two arcs then stops. I cannot understand why. I am considering buying another transformer just incase I get this coil all built and the thing decides to poop out on me.

Its a 15kV 30mA Allanson BTW

I've been looking at these franceformers on ebay for a while now...

Perhaps your coil has GFI in it, or is it one of those electronic types.
If you had two 15kV30mA NSTs, then you could parallel them to get 15kV60mA.

I checked the auction for GFI before I bought it... and it used to work. :/

I am just going to go ahead and buy the franceformer, like you said corona, worse/best case scenario I just parallel them!

ALL new Allisons are equiped with safetys to prevent electrocution. You are going to have to remove the GFI somehow.

Even transformer based NSTs are equipped now with a GFI by law.
