A while ago I came across a website about someone experimenting with IGBTs to replace spark gaps in large coils traditional coils. I seemed to have lost the page.
I imagine the stress of peak currents and voltage would be murder on IGBTs...
Could someone fill me in if they know anything about this experiment?

Thanks I saw the link... but I got questions. Currently I have a coil running 240mA 12Kvac... the high voltage needs to be DC to run the SDAC IGBTs right? Currently there is now way of using AC on the set up.

Besides getting AC-DC is relatively easy, even with voltages btwen 1-20K I think, just use a bunch of diodes in a bridge formation and presto you have dc.

right, I got that, but when you do this your voltage is higher. An AC version of SISC has not been discussed yet on any page. If it has let me know. All of them are running DC or so it seems. Anyone here run one for an AC coil?

No. An AC SISG would need one stack of IGBTs for each direction. That's twice as many expensive IGBTs for the same output power. So it's more cost-effective to rectify the high voltage supply.
