Remember that this was a general thread and my specific question was:
Anyone with comments/insights into their own countries performance?

One thing I do find interesting is the dominance of particular countries. I seem to recall East Germany being prominent (perhaps in days before drug testing) then the USSR.

I'm sorry I took it to the right Peter, I apologize.

I enjoy it when I see my country win at anything, but I mostly enjoy just watching the drive and dedication of the individual athletes giving it their all.
Even the Chinese Gymnastics team. One has to admit, they they do some pretty impressive stunts on the uneven bars. The Swim relay was where I expected Australia and the US to shine, and shine they did.

that right there is sad about the fireworks...

Don't you think its a bit hypocritical to condemn the Chinese for "faking" various parts of their ceremonies?

If you don't think they do that here as well as elsewhere, your a bit naive. Its done all the time.

Especially the media who is making a big deal out of it all. They thrive on marketing the spectacular and go through similar lengths to make stories stand out - even if its means "bending the truth."

Actually I MISS THE EAST GERMAN WOMEN! Those hulking 200lb vicious hairy young girls with triceps like a loaf of bread, an Adam's Apple on their 20" necks...
They always looked at other female competitors like would like to stuff them in a gym bag & take them home as a souvenir!
I always expected them to yawn and see canine teeth as long as a wolf's...... Those were the days!

I found the opening firework "footprints" hard to believe too when I saw them. For the simple reason that it is difficult to detonate a batch of indvidual fireworks at a precise height even if fired together. They all looked very even particularly when viewed from almost at the same level. Is this new technology or was some touching up involved? I am aware that some images from a smog/rain free previous run were included.
It was a good effect although I didn't recognize it for what it was at first. You had to have the heights worked out well in the camera plane.

QFT. Media always sensationalizes and bends the truth just enough. For America, they'll do anything to spread what is in essence, propaganda against China, albiet subtle and is only preparing the mindset for what could potentially be yet another war.

Disneyland has been using an air launch system for their fireworks shows for several years. This is basically a bunch of computer controlled air cannons. The shells are detonated in the air by electronic timers. So, it is certainly possible to have a well coordinated display with split second timing.

@aonomus

The US wouldn`t dare attack as well-prepared an enemy as China - it`ll just be another cold war. It`s already started as far as I can see.

I didn't mean anything bad about the fireworks, it is just I thought they were real, at first (it is the homeland of fireworks...)
I know many places fake them, I just didn't know they did... frankly I couldn't care less if they did...

Sorry, my comment wasn't directed at you. It was just a generalized comment in respond to all the responses.

BTW . . .
Look at Milli Vanilli. They had us *all* fooled!
