"Did they think we were retarded?
Did they honestly believe that the rest of the world couldn't tell the difference between grade school children and legal aged competitors?
"
You seem to think they care what the West thinks. Why should they?
They are doing this to impress their own people who are often rather less sophisticated and cynical.
The idea is that they can convince their own people that the government that can put on a show like this must be a good government.

It's obvious that they don't.

Just an alternative opinion. The little I have seen of the games so far suggest that:

1: The Chinese have gone to extraordinary lengths to provided a spectacular opening ceremony. This would indicate a desire to impress on an international level. Of course they also wish to impress the local population as well. Athens and Sydney were no different.

2: The use of the military in their big formations is a ready source of large numbers of fit trained men. The use of men in uniform however was distasteful to the theme of the Olympics and has been criticised. Nevertheless, it was in a historical theme segment. Regardless, even if China sees things a bit differently, what of it. Culturally that may have seemed appropriate to them.

3 The venues, security and general running of the games have been very smooth with only occasional criticisms.

4 The comment about 8 year old girls being passed off as 16 year olds is stupid. Provided data if you are going to make outlandish accusations.

Dont know if anyone heard about this, but the woman that sang at the opening cermoney, infact, didnt sing at all. She was mereley faking because the real singer, they thought, wasnt attractive enough.

Also, the opening fireworks were mostly computer generated tapes, then sold to TV networks to make it more interesting and "fantastic".

that right there is sad about the fireworks...

anyways, the venues do have some big issues, but not too much concerning us as they do other countries (ones in Asia to be specific)... The national website blocks that China has that blocks anything that says something even remotely bad about China, even unintended, or talks about Tibet, or anything controversial or something similar, are also affecting the reporters who are monitoring the games... China says they were going to remove them, but when I last checked (a day or two before the games) they were still there and I have not heard otherwise...

and there is strong evidence of the Chinese gymnasts being underage...

Frankly though, even though I am willing to argue this for a while, I propose we stop this nonsense, since these games are meant to stop this kind of stuff...

hey now i remember why i didnt make a tread about olympics there is too much people who are going to be expressing there stupid political views on here, a mod should close this thread as it has nothing to do with olympics but more of peoples bias opinions on china's government wink

4HV is not a site for people to express there political views but a forum where people intrested in high voltage and electronics can get together. mistrust

Okay, I'm from Texas, and Texans like to exaggerate a little bit. What I meant to say was that they "Look" like 8 year old girls.
As for proof about their ages, I provided 2 links to respected news sites giving citations to their under-agedness. (if thats a word).
Rather than get proof, I went with what 99.8% of all the news in the world was saying.
The other .2% being Chinese propaganda.

All I was trying to really say was that they look like 8 year old girls.

Remember that this was a general thread and my specific question was:
Anyone with comments/insights into their own countries performance?

One thing I do find interesting is the dominance of particular countries. I seem to recall East Germany being prominent (perhaps in days before drug testing) then the USSR. Now China is heading off the medals list.
Now even Australia has more medals than Russia although that probably won't last.

It would be really interesting to know details of the displays, how many zillion LED's were used etc and the mechanics of the displays.
