Wow, you can really see how lightning starts from the sky (in the form of leaders), then the first one to contact the earth conducts the huge return stroke from ground.
Any idea what FPS the camera would have been using to capture this?

Very cool indeed. This camera would certainly have to be shooting many thousands of frames per second to capture it with that kind of clarity.
Lightning doesn't always exclusively move from sky to ground. Visible ground leaders (or streamers) can precede a positive stroke, which are typically more powerful than your average negative stroke. I've personally caught atleast two positive leaders on film, one of them alarmingly close (didn't know it till later). Basically in that case, first streamer to the cloud base wins.
