Thanks, the discharge is not "loud", it just hisses silently like a wind (probably as the particles shoot from the nails they move air too).

I can't actually see any corona discharge (the type you get between two HV electrodes just before an arc strikes), just the very tips of the nails glowing dimly.

It has been on for a few hours (with some breaks) so far and I did not notice any problems or irritations. What I'm more concerned about is prolonged exposure to low concentration of ozone

I don't like shelling out big $$ for something I can build for free (I believe these things are hugely overpriced), plus I can have much better control over output voltage/power etc. And whats the fun in that you just buy something when you can do it yourself cheesey

I just need someone experienced to tell me if the ozone is a problem or not...

The $600 Living Air ionizer almost knocked me over with ozone as I walked by its Kiosk. They try to use activated carbon to reduce Ozone but its still emitted.

The reality of ionizers in your home is you just let it emit its Ozone while you're away because you set it on a 5 minute timer or whatever is sufficient for your home.

Ozone can make you sick as a dog in just a few minutes and it is not a very pleasant experience. So if you feel any of the symptoms it is a good idea to open a window.

If nausea, headaches, stinging eyes and gradual lung damage are a problem then yes. Ozone is so reactive though that it I imagine it will just decompose into oxygen in under an half an hour. Link2

I've got two Ionic Breeze brand air purifiers here if you want them. They don't work but they have a flyback style MOSFET driven HV producing circuit that shouldn't be too hard to fix. $30 (mainly for shipping) takes them both.

It has been hissing a day and night now, and I didn't notice any problems at all. Even when I move my head ~10cm away from the electrode, I can't smell any ozone. So i guess its OK?

Edit: I just noticed I actually CAN smell something when moving my head close, and it does not smell like ozone but more likely a fresh air, almost like some kind of perfume tongue . So I GUESS it is doing what it should cheesey

Probably, if you can't smell ozone even when up close you should be alright. Does your room smell any better?

I'm not really sure, but I think my hay-fewer (is this the right word for "summer grass allergy?") has improved slightly, though I would like to eliminate any placebo effects tongue
