I was thinking about it, and with a 5mm metal ring just outside the stationary gaps, it should be plenty enough to stop the rod flying into someone. You could even drill some holes in it and put the stationary electrodes within an insulator into the ring.

Well, even in the worst case it`ll just fly off along a tangent from the circle drawn by the centre of mass of the rod. Even a 20cm rod at 6000rpm would only be 60-odd m/s - assuming that the motor is still at full speed the instant the end of the rod leaves the hub and that it doesn`t just jam on the electrodes. A heavy disc with little slugs all round the rim sounds far more dangerous to me.

Just found the collar stuff on T Blakes site, it should work a treat. Nice gap by the way Ultra. After this thread, I'm again sold on the idea of this gap.

My Gap is asynchronous rotary, not Synchronous. I'm using a motor start cap and a dimmer circuit to control the speed. Finding Async motors is a pain, and the one I have was actually the blower fan from a microwave I salvaged. Never any issues, and quite cool for that single dancing spark on the toroid.
