to get the best voltage rating for your mmc its

rating = Vrms * 1.41 * 2.5

Vrms of the transformer
1.41 is sqrt(2) for peak voltage
2.5 is to be sure to get above the positive peak to negative peak voltage

gotcha.
Arc, I recall in one of your previous posts that I should do a single string of the cornell dubillier caps x 20 (.15uF 2000v), that should come out to about 7.5nF 40kV?

I was on the IRC room the other day, and someone else was telling me to not do 7.5nF, but instead 11.1nF... I dont understand where those differences come from... He also said that if I did 7.5nF it would fry my transformer... :/

thanks!

What you want is LRT capacitance. Or Larger than resonant.
The guys at teslamap have this to say about it.
"NSTs do not operate well with resonate capacitance. They should only be used with "Larger Than Resonate" (LTR) primary capacitors. The LTR static capacitance should be used with a static primary spark gap. The LTR sync capacitance should be used with a sync type gap."

Here is the link.

Get teslamap if you don't already have it while you are there as well.
Good stuff.

What kind of gap are you using? LTR for static or arsg it 7.4nf and for sync it is 10.1 . It does not have to be exact but it is best to have around that. BLEEP BLOP BLOOP~]#!

I am going to be doing a srg at around 180BPS.

I am currently using a combination of tesla map and mitch tilbury's excel design sheets. and your brains

I'm reviewing some of Mitch's work and I think there are some concerns with it from the start. I'm also working on optimizing the coil like he did, but in one of his case studies in chapter 2 he is saying that 29 AWG is optimal with ~ 8KVA SGTC system. So I'm not sure if he acutally built a TC or has any construction experience, his critera may need some tweaking and that's what I'm trying to do now when I'm off work.

OK, I am having trouble with my capacitance...

i have the .15uF 2000VDC caps, I am trying to achieve 10.1nF for optimal performance but in order to do so I have to sacrifice voltage tolerance, or I'll have a capacitance higher than what is useable.

Will this even matter? can I have a cap that is larger than can be used? or should I just lower the BPS or something...
