Well, i got the doubler working and it runs flawlessly(other than heating of everything but the circuit itself)

You coil is out of tune....and maybe not a good idea to run in CW mode @ full power.

Where are the Fans on the tube?

Should not run a 833C Plate Red....... only 833A's rolleyes

Put a current meter on the plate and do not exceed plate current spec or that tube will die real fast.

Tuning is very important on a VTTC. Watch your plate current and tune, more spark, less current ................you are going the right way.

cheers,
Ch

Thanks alot! I will do some more tuning tomorrow... but i was not running CW... It was a half wave doubler like steve ward used..

BTW can you tell me why my secondary is burning soo fast? it only takes it a few seconds...............................

maybe your secondary wire is too thin, until you get some thicker wire and make better secondary, you should put some varnish or paint anything that will not arc but spread the head evenly cheesey

Have you checked the polarity of the feedback coil? I was getting similar performance out of mine, no matter how much tuning I did, until I switched the leads from the feedback coil. Before I was getting about 10" - 12" arcs with the feedback about 10" up from the bottom of the secondary and the plate would glow red very quickly like yours is doing. I switched the leads and the difference was 4" more output without any additional tuning. I brought the feedback coil down to about 6" up the secondary and put about 85-95V in from the variac and achieved 18" for 30 to 45 second runs without the plate glowing.

Another thing that helped considerably with the plate glow was adjusting the coupling by moving the secondary up and down until I found the sweet spot. I found that, for me, moving the secondary up about .5" made the primary tuning more pronounced and put less stress on the plate.

Well, it seems i have quite some work ahead of me :P. But anyway, today i added the second capacitor to the doubler and i got much thicker arcs and about 1-2 inches more spark length, but then i got sparks to the primary and my diode started to have arcs around the outside..... I thought i blew the filament on the tube but my plug that i use is not any good... THANK GOODNESS!

The secondary is 16 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter with 28 gauge. According to tesla map that is 1,166 turns, 318 khz, 6.83 pf, 30.49 mh.

Well i recently found out my secondary for this coil is ruined. I guess the pvc was moist or had dirt on it because it has carbon tracks on the INSIDE of the pipe and every time i use it it just burns. Ever since the storm we have been working hard cleaning up all of the insulation. I am not going to be able to make a new secondary any time soon, so this project will be on hold for a long time. Kinda makes me sad :p.

Well, i put it back together, made a smaller base for it(still wayyyy to big) that is just some plywood and some 1 1/2 by 5 1/2's. The plywood is square, 18 inches, and there are two 'levels'. Each so called 'level' is held up by the 1 1/2 by 5 1/2's which are 10 inches, so the thing is 10 inches tall, and 18 inch square. I was working on it from 4pm to 4am working on it, and all for nothing.. I got it all put together, let the filament heat up for about 20 minutes, and fired it up. Rather disappointing mad . The sparks were about 8 inches, it used so much power that i could see the filament get dimmer when i turned the plate supply on, and worst of all, the arcovers. From the tickler(feedback) coil to the secondary, the spark traveled up about 6 inches of the pvc pipe former, and slightly hit the secondary. I dont even see a spot on the secondary, but the primary former is ruined because it has carbon tracks. The small spark length could easily be solved with a bunch of tuning, but with these arcovers, that is impossible.

I have tried changing the coupling to no avail. I raised the secondary, and the racing arc was just thicker and hotter. The grounding is just connected to a really thick pipe pounded into the cement(i didn't do it, it has been there for like 30 years, as long as this house has been here)

No topload.

First attachment is the former, and the second is the grid coil, which was wound on transparencies so i could move the coil up or down.

Oh, and by the way, the grid coil was not insulated, just magnet wire, but as long as those arcovers were no reasonable amount of insulation would help.

Update: I forgot to say, i am making a new primary and feedback coil, and see if i can get it to work. I will have the primary smaller(same gauge, just closer wound) and the feedback coil will be lower. Could have just been coupling even though i tried to make it right.
