What I think would be particularly interesting is how the field distribution around the coil affects the streamer paths/shape. Even if all it did was intensify the brightness of the streamers, that would look pretty cool.

I once filled my pllsstc's enclosure with helium (from a large baloon) after I taped off the vent holes and the result was longer sparks, and more sparks breaking out from my torriod (instead of the breakout point where I wanted them). To get arround that I changed to a simple inverted glass cup on top of the coil (also filled with He, good thing it is lighter than air) which worked well and gave nice looking streamers for about 30s until the glass exploded from the thermal stress.
Does anybody know what would happen if you ran a solid state tesla coil under higher pressures, like 40+psi? 100psi? I heard it would make the enclosure explode, is that true?
Any idea what the best way to make gas instantly heat up would be? Is it true that when the arcs actually go, the air "expands" due to the resonant frequency of air being hit?

The easiest way to make a gas expand quickly is to pump a lot of power into it very quickly, a capacitive discharge seems like it would work well.
And yes the air expands when where the streamers go, but it has absolutley nothing to do with 'resonant frequiency of air being hit' BS, but it just that the air is bein ionised and being turned into a plasma, heating up, and expanding.
