I second. Keep the degauss coils! I have saved a bunch in wire by saving these. I usually use a drill and an old solder bobbin or something and a foot pedal. You usuall get 27-32ga wire. Unwrap the tape, then take one end and put secure it to the bobbin. The tricky part is to find the correct side to unwind from. Never draw anything through anything. If it gets caught just be brave and bounce and tug. I can salvage a whole big one (15-17" CRT) in like 15 min this way. Go slow and pay attention. I've done several and to my surprise have never tangled once. No lie. I don't unwrap it unless I need it either.

I also like to bust open the CRT and salvage the phosphorus and the screen. Take off the deflection coils, and score a line around the neck of the tube. Then *wack* with a screwdriver. If you've done right, it just goes woosh and cracks and the neck comes off. Wear goggles of course, I might recommend face mask sometimes. Then bust out the sides, making sure the big glass doesn't fall in. Then unscrew/cut out the elecron grid. It makes a very nice filter! Then you can rinse the phosphorus into a jar. I think it's posionous, so conduct yourself apporpriately.

Go ahead and build a ZVS, you'll probably have all the parts in the monitor. You'll figure out what to do with the flyback, trust me. I'll sit there for hours just drawing arcs and roasting stuff. You can change the sound with different power sources too. A battery is almost perfectly quiet, recified hums really cool. My fave is the paperclip. Draw an arc to the paperclip and when it gets hot it turns into a sparkler. Another thing I like to do is run my big SGTC with it. It's pretty neat to run bang-bang. I can get like 20" IIRC. You won't see any discharge unless to a grounded object. It scared the crap out of me when I first discovered it. I was getting maybe .25" corona and reached out to touch it with a screwdriver. It jumped like 10" into the screwdriver, down the handle, and into my hand. Harmless, but made me jump!

Some other guy built a night vision scope for like 30-50 bucks IIRC. Search for "miata's plasma globes" I think it's on that site.

You can parallel primaries and series HV output for double the voltage. I have done four, which was most impressive. DO NOT use a screwdriver for a chicken stick.

Do I have the parts in a monitor to make a single transistor driver?

Sure, you can try main SMPS or flyback transistor, don't push it to too much voltage and it will live for some time.
