Guys, its not hard to find big slabs of real aluminum heatsink, just check ebay. You can get heatsinks of that size for about 20-30 dollars usually.

BTW, i like the cooling scheme you have there, its good to cool the MMC too wink.
i believe aluminium is way too low densisty

Really? Almost every heatsink I've seen has been aluminium.

Canada: anything $20 or more gets customs tax and thanks to potentially corrupt customs officers, might not ever get to its destination.

Yeah Aonomus, I think you have the same problem in canada has I have in brazil, you only get the package if goes with a big shipping company (DHL, Fedex and others) and you can get 250% of tax ...

Nice work Reaching! I was use your DRSSTC (that medium with IRG4PC50UD), and I was impressed with that such nice setup, and now its again a very good device there! Keep good working!

Hey Dr.Spark, theres no reason to tell your work bad. you build the verybest drsstcs ive ever seen. ok, they dont include the newest technology, but from my expierience, your craftmanship is way better than mine. and hey, they work great for you :)

im not looking for a beauty but for a well working and reliable teslacoil with new innovative technology. for sure, thats hard work, but im sure your work isnt much easier at all.

i can relax by working out new drivers and technologies, and you can relax by working with plexi, and im for sure not the only one here who would say, that your plexiwork is incredible.

ok..

some new infos.

got my wire today and started winding the secondary. coated 3 layers until now,, dont know how much left.. but it looks good and tommorow or so i can start building the toroid.

cause i know that the circuit is working i can then start to test and adjusting, so first light for the weekend i hope

Finished the secondary coil today. i thought, that it would be easier and better to use a new system to fasten the secondary. i used some sort of selfmade flange with 8 holes in it at the bottom of the secondary. with this system the secondarys weight and any force applied to it will be absorbed on a bigger surface, and with 8 screws holding the secondary on place its really safe.

i added a 4mm banana jack at the secondary bottom and a banana plug in the middle of the primary. so you just need to "plug in" the secondary and screw the 8 nuts on. thats made in less than a minute. very nice if you want to transport your coil.

the secondary itself is 76cm in height and wound with 0,3mm enamelled wire on 73cm. diameter of 16cm.

with the toroid the resonant frequency should be in the range of around 60khz.

Coupling is in the range of .185 so just below .2 what i found is a good deal for helical primaries..

Things to do:

Toroid :P but i want it to be nice and thats the problem. i dont have the money to buy a huge spun toroid so it seems that i need to spend many hours on building this big toroid.

i thought of using al duct pipe and bend it to a toroid, fix it with some wire and fill the grooves with some sort of poly... then sand it to get a smooth surface and tape it with small stripes of aluminium tape.. hrhr that will last forever

Ok, steve was right :P

yesterday i did first tests with fully assembled secondary and a smaller toroid for testing, but still within the frequency range. But....

There was a problem. With 30volts applied everything seemed fine and i could draw some arcs 10cm or so, but as i raised the voltage i lost feedback and the current got high..

so i measured and tested everything , the high side drivers, the powersupply etc but no problem at all. disconnected the feedback transformer and applied 60khz on the input without primary connected to test the bridge. Everythings fine!

and than i played around with the grounding and found the fault. it is the toslink receiver on the high side driver boards.! above 30volts or so the fieldstrengh is strong enough to let the receivers go mad.

But i fixed the problem and hopefully first light for today. i cut 4 pieces of al tape and taped it on the receivers, connected a wire on it and grounded each toslink receiver shield to the V- of its high side driver.

Like this.

1219072837 76 FT49508 Img 0725

raised the voltage up to 80volts and everything seems fine, so more infos to come soon.

PS

It works!
Played alot with tuning but without a new toroid i cant get it right, but everything seems to work now. raised the input voltage to 100volts and played around a bit (30mins or so) streamers up to 80cm into the ceiling. everything stays cool and the warning leds on the front are all off,,.

so, everyone who wants to build a drsstc with toslink -> dont do it, believe me :P its a pain in the ass and complicated as hell, and for sure this is the first and last drsstc i build WITH high side toslink drivers.

Ok, here i am, with no good news at all.

Im sorry for the late update and the bad news. The project is on hold for now until i get new material and the enthusiasm to finish this project.
after many tests and debugging its time to acknowledge my defeat. there are too many things i didnt put in my calculation at all and now im a bit tired to search for the bugs and get em out. i was proud of this project and a bit vain to be the first on trying and succeeding.
but this success seems to be farther away than anytime before i started this project. its not just the toslink thing at all that makes problems to a lot. there are many small bugs in the new modulator ive build which are showing up by practice.

ok, to be honest: the coil works very well and discharges to about 1,5metres are possible with only 110v of input, but after building many commercial drsstcs and coils every imaginable size and equipped with any possible addons and gigs and secret improvements to ease even the simplest things, i started thinking.

back to the roots or trying to get one step further? i would have thought that im able to go this step but i lost, yeah, in every sight of things i lost.. Why? Well, its hard to say but i think i came to a point of development and improvement which made things likely more worse ....

no, i havent destroyed my bridge or something else. not a single destroyed piece of silicon at all that could have changed my mind this way. its more likely the total defeat and the knowledge and to realize for myself that i gave up.

but, this project is not dead. it would be to sad to see a mostly finished drsstc dusted in a corner of my room. "back to the roots", is the point of thinking now, but just a little..

i have to redesign my modulator completely. get rid of this fuc**** toslink sh** of silicon put in a plastic case and call it high tech.. get rid of the high side driver crap and smash out the whole high side powersupply and its components. then back to the roots with some splendid and easy to understand gdts and a new driver..

so, what will be left after this operation? nothing at all, just the bare bridge and the case with completed primary and seconday.....

yes, life is hard-
