Since most of my devices are single switch I always use the heatsink as a "wire" and I'm including the silicon greese without any problems. I can only recommend this approach...
BTW: Very good idea with the mercury! I know that Hg does not belong to the most toxic stuff we have in the lab. I wouldn't be affraid of it so much. To avoid any leakage of the vapour you can always cover the sides of the transitor by some kind of oil based paste or sillicon...

If you can find a heat past (thermal grease) that is conductive then go ahead a try it but as the owner of a 1lb jar of mercury I have to say don't even think about it. As a liquid it might not hurt you but it is constantly turning to a vapor at room temp and when heated it turns to a vapor even faster.
