Frequency Splitting - Measurable at all?

What you class as frequency splitting in the frequency-domain is observed as beating or amplitude modulation of a single frequency in the time domain.

An analogy is like playing two notes right next to each other (a semitone apart) on a piano. What you generate in the frequency domain is two notes with closely spaced frequencies. What you tend to hear is one tone with an annoying audible beating. It is repetitive constructive and destructive interference between the two closely spaced frequencies that gives the "AM envelope" appearance in the time domain.

The conclusion that comes out of this is:

Two closely spaced frequencies added together _ARE THE SAME THING_ as one new frequency amplitude-modulated by a slower beat frequency. There is even a trig-identity that proves it with real maths - you can't argue with that!:

Thanks for the explanations guys, it's starting to become clearer.
What I don't understand though is how the coupling affects the beat frequency.
Richie, you said on your site that it is because each tuned circuit "sees" more of the capacitance in the other tuned circuit,
but coupling is a function of inductance so how does this happen?

As you increase the coupling more of the secondary turns are magnetically coupled to the primary, and therefore the primary sees more of the secondary side capacitance. That's how I think of it, although it's probably not technically enturely correct.

If you haven't done so, you might want to build the little mechanical model with the two identical pendulums. You can see quite easily how altering the space between them changes the coupling and the rate at which energy is exchanged between the two systems. On the other hand, if you're lazy, just look at the animated GIF!
