It's just a SGTC built into a cordless drill. Once you know how to make a SGTC it's no great feat.

Thats pretty cool, and it must have taken some thought to fit all that into a single drill. With the low voltage, low power, and size restrictions, one would think it would be much easier to do with a solid state coil.

SGTC = Spark Gap Tesla Coil, the classical Tesla coil topology that Tesla himself invented/used.

Cheers,

Basically, it is just two pieces of metal. I would have to say you should search the internet for tesla coil and learn more about them. I have been looking up tesla coils for 4 years and i just started to really understand them a year ago.

I heard you are supposed to "tune" these things. What does it mean to tune one, which parts are this done to, how is it done, and how do you know what it needs to be tuned to?

To tune you just adjust the size of capacitor and the point at where the primary is 'tapped'. To learn wha this means just look up tesla coils. There is a ton of information on the internet that will help you.

Or, one could just look to the left side of the screen over there where it says "HvWiki" and look under High Voltage.

Or you could follow this link here.
