Wow Mates! Good work. Your rolled caps look like a spark gap in that pic, and there are racing arcs on your primary!?!
Looks good though.

Yea i would be a little concerned about the corona in those caps. Although they make a cool glowing effect smile

I also noticed those spark-overs into the primary... I'll have to make the primary more flat-like

Regarding the caps: Yes, those are the most lossy part of the setup - no doubt... However, accordig to their finall rating (13nF/50KV) they save a lot of money wink . Also, despite it looks that they must suffer a lot, in fact they become only litle bit warm. The internal damage on the dielectricum is visible (craks like pattern) but not becoming worse. It looks that the fact the caps are sealed on the ends led to elimination of all the available oxygen inside, by ozone-plastic reactions and now they can stand anything. Hopefully one day I'll get a vacuum pump and make those caps oil based...

Few changes on my coil…
First of all I cut the secondary a bit so now it is all dipped inside PP tube filled by cooking oil. All sealed by hot glue. The coil is smaller and looks a bit better like this… I also increased the power of the Iggy driver. I don’t think I can go much further with single transistor. I’m still thinking about bridge rectifier for the Iggy output, but it is a lot of diodes – do you somebody knows whether this makes any sense?

Movie of this new set up is here Link2

This time only few pictures with my shitty camera (my Samsung GX10 will be back in my hands soon, so I have big plans for a new of set art-like photographs based on this small coil…)

Cheers Mates

I changed the primary today and a small miracle happened... amazed The longest sparks are over 20cm!
The coil is becoming very loud now, my neighbors know when is on frown That's the biggest disadvantage of the SG based coils. More power is in home indoor conditions problem. But I love the sparks of SGTC and the fact you can use top load without break out.

Hi guys, today I tried to use bridge rectifier for my IGGY output and it increased the power significantly. Now the sparks lenght reaches 30cm which as I believe is a real record for an Iggy driven coil...

The secondary: 45cm hight /4.5cm diameter, in cooking oil, approx. 1000turns
Primary: 4 turns, 13cm diameter (multiwire data cable)
Caps: rolled 7.2 nF
Power source: Iggy coil removed from casing and dipped in cooking oil

Awesome! I just got an ignition coil, so I'll have to try something like this soon. What is the big metal can next to the TC?
