Hi guys,
I build this simple ignition coil driver Link2 and tested it as power source for my small SGTC. The result is not bad and I plan to increase the power soon, so maybe it can be even better…

The HV diode and HV caps are both home made. (The caps are immortal!). Here are the links for the protocols Link2 Link2

Unfortunately I have only very bad compact camera at the moment so the pictures are very poor quality.

Very Cool! Since you're using a DC topology you could also investigate some different primary and secondary coil geommetries and see how it affects your performance.
You might want to try fewer primary turns so your di/dt is higer in the primary and see how that improves spark length. You might also want to play with a flat primary and coupling to see if you can get a maximum spark length, just for fun.

I played with the primary today... I think not bad for a single iggy wink

Very nice, Although did you notice you're losing power with secondary corona and discharge, I'd say aboy 1-40 turns from the top?

Iggy gets hot, but after long minutes of operation... so not such a big problem. I have to rather solve a better spark gap and also the primary is still not perfect.

Few more pictures with better camera, I like the beauty of SGTC more and more...

I have a Tesla coil powered like that. How many inch sparks? Mine has 3 inch.

Check the video - the longest sparks are close to 20cm (almost 8 inch). The topload diameter is 13 cm)...

Today I finnished new primary and icreased a bit the power of the iggy driver...

BTW: I have question, do you somebody knows whether using a bridge rectifier would provide resonably more power from the iggy output?

Finally, I borrowed a bit better camera so I could make a bit better pictures...Now, it rises a question how much more power I can get from single iggy??? I'll try to add 30% more power tomorrow... Maybe something will die, if not I'll send new pics and video wink

BTW: Hmm, not so much responses to this thread… Maybe it is only really boring little project, I know. In general this coil is only about exploring the limits of Iggy coil as a power source for SGTC and also what can stand my home made caps. Both surprised me...
