If you're referring to primary turns, 8-12 is probably cutting it close. If you can, I would go with around 15 just in case you need those extra turns.

Sure, in my first spark-gap coil I soldered two lengths of copper pipe together to make the primary, because I couldn't get a single piece long enough. Just try and make it neat with no pieces of wire or lumps of solder sticking out, and then wrap lots of electrical tape round the join.
Oh, and by the way, you get soft copper pipe that bends fine. It's used for car brake lines and air conditioning.

I use copper tubing (not pipe) for my primary needs, which are zero now since the EM spikes keep frying things, and the cage I made must of had a leak... [hint] - I set off all the surge protectors in the house, fried two cellphones
