That 555 thermin looks funky Dr. 2N3055, I'll have to try it. B.E.A.M. totally rocks! It's what got me interested in electronics initially, and ironically I have yet to built a beam bot...
Thanks! When you build it, make sure to try different things with it. For example, wave your hand over it with fingers apart. Or put it under a mains powered light.
The problem with those BEAM things is that those small motors are hard to get... I'm myself now planning to build a semi-BEAM bot I tried building FRED, but with my 'big' motors it barely moved.
Oh and by the way, my cousin is going to build an opto-theremin too, and he's gonna practice to play "Master Of Puppets" with it

I think he will quickly find that he will be "Master of Insensible Noise", they have really bad ranging. I have also built a digital theremin and that is a world of difference. The opto-theremin is more of a curiosity rather than an instrument.

LED throwie talkie would be pretty funny. My version would use a 10F206 and 24C256 to store the audio, using the 2 bit Roman Black audio trick...
I have yet to see anyone actually build a speech generator that fits into a PIC but with a bit of external circuitry you can synthesize waveforms (bandpass filter, 3 bit R-2R DAC, etc)

I put together a Cell Phone Acoustic Coupler... barely worked, as I had to manually time and press "dial" on the cellphone, and I only got it to work once... but I was happy when it did... I hope to somehow make the timing automatic...

Perhaps I've found a use for those vibrate motors I swiped from all those dead Samsung mobiles... :) a haptic glove. Basic idea is to glue one onto each fingertip and thumbtip, and a few at various gripping and pinching points on the hand. Might work well. -A "Bother" said Pooh, as he hadn't expected the Spanish Inquisition...
