Out of curiosity, where did you get all of the MOCs? If you stripped them all from MOs, I envy your ability to find sources of dead/discarded MOs.

I have close to 40 MOCs & a ridiculous amount of MOTs as well as a shed of parts that I gathered over the course of 2 months + .
I have a little trick that I'll share with you. Make a list of sources of HV materials. A list of items that USE the stuff you want. I would go into town and find a group of smaller TV / electronic-type repair stores and simply ask. They generally have little use for MVO and will generally give them to you. Occasionally you'll find a "winner" of a shop that's been in business for a LONG time and has some fantastic items (just have a list handy of what you really want) and slip them some cash. I have some monstrous HV goods that provide a challenge of identification but getting them had been little problem. If you are a youngster the chances of getting them for free are even better than doing this as an adult! I am debating on whether to invest in one situation where the gentleman wants to sell some TO-3 transistors all brand new and of a very usable design (2N3773) for a very reasonable amount but the numbers are staggering and the local Engineering Dept. at the University may chip in.

One place saved the chassis of OLD TVs for me with some flybacks that were really unique. You can get VERY fast at de-soldering and wind up with collections of parts that would cost hundreds of dollars if bought separately. Some of the stuff is simply unavailable anymore UNLESS you look. (Like HV tube designs or transformers that look like they were designed for arc welders but are NOT.....they are dual coil HV things from the 1950's!). Then identification becomes the challenge!

Another thing is to find the yard that the local electric company uses to hold their old pole utilities (there are often TWO yards; the "official" one and the storage or junk yard....that's the prize!). That stuff can be free if you cart it off but there is no guarantee that the pigs will work: they sell the stuff that they know is new or nearly so. But insulators are generally free and two or three pigs can fit in a truck (my wife would scream if I did that however). If you start in on acquiring this stuff, it soon will become easier and easier!

Airplane grave yards have radar stuff & MUCH more, copier & printer companies have enormous sources of HV material but you have to do some surgery. My trick was to make a list of the sources of HV materials at their source use - then find the companies that utilize them and simply ask. With NEWER TVs the size of the CRT is NOT an indication of the HV materials. Look for older stuff. There are some environmental laws that affect the disposal of some materials (x-ray, etc) but if you are polite and really do tear it down and dispose of the stuff ethically; it is doing someone a favour and they'll keep being a source.

No exaggeration, I wound up with 9 computer monitors (some very old) that yielded some of the most unique flybacks imaginable. All free & took only a afternoon to acquire and deal with / sort, etc. Getting the stuff has not been the hard part, transportation (in these high gas prices) & storage has always been the challenge!

Patriot,

I meant to post this sooner, but time got away. Thank you much for the heads-up.

My 3 aerovox capacitors arrived today. They pack quite a punch! Just one can explode 22 gauge wire and crush cans! I plan on using all three in an induction ring launcher. Thanks Steve!

I am getting a little concerned because mine havent arrived yet. I am thinking that maybe the ups thought they were something other than capacitors and they dont want to ship them.

Edit: Never mind about what i sead above because i got them today smile. They are in excellent condition and very well packed.

Hey, i know that it has been quite a long time but i was wondering if you or Quicksilver (or anyone for that matter) had some MOC's for cheap? I am as always short on money, but i plan to attempt a small can crusher or ring launcher.

If you care to know, i would probably charge them to 8kv just as Steve did not suggest (:P) and put them in a box made of 5/8 inch 5-ply plywood with vent holes (i am sure these won't last too long). That is why i want to buy them cheap, just some old MOC's nobody loves anymore.

I would prefer to pay money order, but if necessary i can try to convince someone to allow me to use PayPal. I can also trade various bits and pieces, or a mix of both :P. Not sure what i have that anyone might need, just ask.

Thanks!
