Hey guys, just seeing if there is any interest, i've got quite a number of new old stock microwave oven caps, "1.02uF at 2200WVAC". They are pretty standard looking things, the same type i abused routinely up to 8kVDC (not recommended) before dumping them into a can shredder or ring launcher. These caps for sale are of course NOT previously used.
So, the asking price is USD$2 each, i have about 50 of them. If no one wants them, they will continue to sit in the basement, but maybe someone here can make good use of them.

I also have some 80uF 1700V Aerovox "energy discharge" capacitors. They were purchased used on ebay a number of years ago, i did some ring launching with them (they seem quite healthy). Pictures and more details upon request, asking price is USD$10 each, i have 6 total.

PM me or reply here if interested, i typically dont have a problem shipping to other countries, at the buyers expense of course.

I'm going to violate my own rule about being silent and thought a fool rather than removing all doubt by speaking. My question is, would these caps be useful for a wire exploder? I have been watching for a suitable cap, but have been unable to find any locally (northern Illinois.)

If these caps would be suitable for said task I would be happy to take the entire lot.

I'll buy 3 of the Aerovox Caps; I've been trying to get my hands on some true pulse-rated capacitors for a long time. PM me and ill give you my info.

EDIT: if you don't mind, could you post a pic of them?

ArcLight,

What size wire do you want to explode? Keep in mind that 80uF at 1700V still isnt a huge amount of energy. I have vaporized some 36awg wire for fun some times, but it was only a foot or so at most. So to be honest, i dont know the pulse rating of these caps, they have standard 1/4-20 threaded posts on top (ceramic feed through type).

Im actually lacking my digital camera's USB cable right now. The overall look of the caps is just like these:

Except my caps are shorter. Actual can dimensions are : 4 5/8" wide, 3 3/4" deep, 6" tall, the insulators + bolts are 1" tall.

To the rest who wanted MOCs, im gonna send you some info.

Steve,

Just as a side note, my given name is also Steve.

Clearly I haven't completely fleshed out my plans (exploding 36ga. wire isn't going to even come close to expectations.) And because of my lack of knowledge (the proper application of various types of capacitors isn't even close to being in my top 10 skill-sets) it is quite possible that I have made some grievously erroneous assumptions.

I figured that I would use a MOT with a doubler to charge the bank. MOCs seemed more reasonable than most other (such as CDE) caps when judged by the uF/cost ratio so I'm guessing that based on your response that I'm missing something really important. Which if that is indeed the case, I would appreciate very much your input.

I have never fully grown up and I still really love a good flash/bang on the 4th of July and New Years. Anvil launching leaves such big divots in the yard and recovery from the pond is so difficult (I'm not getting only younger) that I don't do that anymore, even though it's still the one thing that will reliably make all the drunks look up at the same time. As I'm sure you know, all fireworks are illegal in our state (I also live in IL, just up the road from NIU), but firearms remain legal for the time being much to the chagrin of our junior senator and presidential candidate. So, for celebratory salutes I have a vented, short-barreled .338 magnum rifle that loaded with a stiff charge of slow burning powder is a real crowd pleaser.

However, whereas I used to only have a couple of distant neighbors that I personally knew, town has moved out to me and I now have hundreds of neighbors across the road of whom I've never met.

Consequently, an ugly, overweight, middle-aged man (truth be known, geezer is probably closer to being accurate) with a rifle that barks like Hell's beast and looks like the Demon's own flame-thrower is apparently unsettling to some of these city dwellers. Seeing as technically I'm “not in town” I could legally continue to make noise the old fashion way. But after seeing TDU's photos of his wire exploding machine I have decided that perhaps his method of simulated mayhem is a more reasonable, neighbor friendly alternative. Additionally, steel wool and aluminum foil is priced right, a good cap bank should last the rest of my life, I would have the option if on occasion I decided to shrink or launch something, and unpleasant late-night visits from grumpy men wearing ninja garb accessorized with those cute little MP-5s would be kept to a minimum.

Over the years I have collected a couple dozen MOCs of various values while “liberating” MOTs for my early coils/ladders and realize that even with another 100 I will still need many more to achieve my ultimate goal. If there is a better/more cost effective method to obtain my desired results without the use of oxidizers I would be most interested and appreciative of knowing.

If not for me, think of my poor frightened neighbors (I could go back to anvil launching.)

Best Regards, ArcLight

what your looking for is putting a lot of power through the wire in a short amount of time. Lytics work well (or those large metal Maxwells) from what I see. Also steel naturally will be more volatile then copper since it has high resistance and if you've ever ground it before it produces showers of sparks. MOCs I'm fairly certain won't work for this kind of thing.
