I won my Nikon D70s in a Newspaper photo competition (with a TC photo of course) in 2005. I recently wrote to the paper suggesting that they do an article on my stuff documenting the best of the 15,000 photos I have taken since with that camera. Of all the things I have done the most unique are the use of long exposures, PLUS the movement of the source of the sparks. This enables you to paint a Xmas tree, make a forcefield around a car or recreate a fictional Tesla coil. I still don't know anyone else who has done significant work in this area, but it is fertile for further interesting stuff. You have to have the long exposure, manual capabilities, remote triggering etc though.

Let's bring this topic up.
I've recently started thinking of buying a dSLR, as my interest in photography has been growing. Looking at different brands and models, Nikon D80 Kit with AF-s 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens seems to have quite a high price-quality ratio. The dirt cheap Nikkor AF-D 50mm f/1.8 lens also seems like a good addition to the toolbox.
I will probably buy these items when I have enough money. Those things are actually very expensive. But until that, I will take my photos with a Canon Powershot A710 IS camera, which is not bad at all for a compact camera. It has a full manual mode, where you can control exposure and aperture. RAW pictures can be taken as well using CHDK. The biggest problem is the high amount of noise in the pictures especially at ISO400-800. I suppose this is quite a common problem with compact cameras.

The D80 is great if you get it at the right price. My only problem with it is that the auto exposure is not always 100% consistent.
I got the Nikkor AF-D 50mm f/1.8 and it is a great lens. What speaks against it is the that focal length is too long for most subjects and too short for most of the the remaining subjects. Even if it is not a great all round lens it works very well on usual 4HV shots that are typically some device at half distance. With some cheap adapter rings it can be reversed and it will work as a macro lens.

I have a Nikon D50 by way of digital, but my favourite camera is still the all-mechanical Olympus OM1, of which I have several fine examples.
I also have several dedicated microscope cameras. (My main microscopes are a Biolam with a trino head, a Vickers metallurgical, and a general purpose Meiji stereo 5x/10x/20x.)

I have a Nikon Coolpix 4500 and a JVC HDD camcorder. I'm looking to upgrade. The Nikon can take insane macro shots and has a focal length of about .250"

Well my trusty Nikon D70s finally died (see top post this page) after 15,000 shots of which 10% made it to my website. I now have a Nikon D300 which is a step up to 12MPixels. Cost is about AUD $2000 for the body only and I can use the old lenses. My website is changing to be more video oriented however, the process to get video to the website is still a tedious one involving 3 different programs and pasting code into the site. I use a Sony digicam with hard disk storage.
