With the S5 there is the ability to do manual, but I rarely use it since I don't need take long-exposure photos anyways.... I used to have a Canon Powershot A40 (way back in the day) it was really good since it gave alot of control over the point and shoot cameras, same like the S5, it gives me all the options I need for documenting things and has a very nice zoom lens for multipurpose use. A dSLR on a student's budget is too much anywas....

I use a cannon powershot sd750, which I am quite happy with :)

It doesn't have quite as many features as I would like, my old powershot a630 was set up so that I could do the focus, apature, exposure, etc manuall but it was only 2MP, and has had a damaged trigger button for a few years now.

The sd750 has plenty of resolution, does really awesome macros, and has a pretty extensive manual mode. You can't manually set the exposure/apeture, but you can do a +/- on the exposure which does most of what is necessary.

A few of my best spark pics:

I have the Canon S5IS, its not a DSLR, but its as close as you need for non-professional/hobby usage.

I have an S5 also, got it for christmas, back then (might be cheaper now) I got it for $320 and also a 16GB card for $75 (something like 4,000 full quality pics, or a good bit of video which I forget offhand how much, like 1hr or more I think).

If you try to take pictures of shy insects then the Canon S5IS falls short but with a dSLR you can buy a macro lens that lets you keep enough distance to the insects.

Actually you can take fairly decent macro pics with the S5... I have not experimented with insects at all nor do I have a good setup for such but have a couple decent macro of fish in my fish tanks.

Here is some insect macros from someone I've talked with on steve's forums using the older S3: Link2 some really great insect pics for a point-n-shoot.

Here are some macros of mine (nothing spectacular):
Link2 an otocinclus catfish, approx 1.5" long taken with camera in supermacro and no flash.

Link2 a red cherry shrimp, approx 1.5" long taken with a raynox DCR-150 macro lens and flash (I think, cant remember that might have been one of the ones I had a table lamp above it - like I said I am pretty limited in equipment here right now).

Looking forward to some extra flashes, tripod, and maybe a trip out to the fields where I can find some insects. I in now way try to say it is as good as a dslr is potentially, but for a p&s I think its pretty darn good.

The point I was trying to make was that even if the S5 can get the required enlargement, you need to get close which some insects and animals do not like. With a dSLR you have the option of getting a lens that has the working distance your require instead of you having to adapt to the working distance of the camera.

Have used a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 for a couple of years (over 4 thousand photos) and have no complaints.

Hope to own a Cannon XSi someday soon.

I have a sony DSC-P52 that I used until the last summer, then I converted it to take infrared photos by polishing the hot mirror chemical off one of the lenses. Now I use a sony DSC-H9, it is great for HV stuff because I can take 1/2000s photos for hot arcs or open the aperture up to f/2 to take photos of faint arcs.
