ya, i contacted a company, talked to them, and they provided a 1200v 200A SCR for free (5500A surge). They said they get all kinds of requests, and they try to give everyone what they want.
What company was that? And what did you ask them?

Sorry, I never meant to imply that you guys are deliberately scamming. I'm talking about the power of the internet here.

If a couple of hobbyists call up X corporation and ask nicely, sure, they might get free samples. They know fine well that you're not a professional, but they assume there's a fair chance you'll become one when you grow up, remember how nice X Corp were, and spec their parts. (It worked for me and Analog Devices.)

But if Joe Hobbyist then posts on a public forum that gets read by hundreds of people daily: "Hey X Corp. give away caps 4 free. heres their phone number lol" then X Corp are going to start getting dozens, maybe hundreds of sample requests for that part. And probably some downright scary phone calls too, from what I know of the average HV hobbyist. confused

They'll probably have no option but to ignore them, as it would cost them too much to fulfil them all. And it'll leave a bad taste in their mouths as regards sampling to hobbyists in the future. Instead of a few people getting some free samples, lots of people will get none, and everyone loses out.
Oops, i see what you are saying. Perhaps i was not thinking about what the consequences might be. Like making the company try to give out to many free parts. I am sorry to every body. I guess i should just have said order from cde. So here it is

If you need capacitors that are good quality, Order from cornell dubilier. If you doubt that they are up to the task, sample one or two, and see for yourself.

Is that better?

I'm not positive, but I think it was Tesla himself who believed that money is the most evil of all necessary evils. Something like that.
I agree.

The title of the topic should really get changed by now ...
Before some may get the idea to abuse cde's well-intentioned offer

oh and shame on you guys , sampleing things should not even be considered if want to cut down on the budget , and to be a "hobbist" will not justify the matter

Well, I don't think it's such a big deal. I'm pretty sure most corporations don't mind sampling the occasional part to hobbyists, for the reasons I mentioned before. I couldn't have made Mjolnir Link2 if it weren't for free IGBT samples.

The problem starts when a whole bunch of you all land on the same corporation at once. So in future maybe just PM your friends instead of starting a thread wink

BTW, it's no secret that the CDE 942 series are very good for making Tesla coil MMCs. Terry Fritz recommended them for years. But pretty much any cap will work, as long as it's polypropylene film/foil with extended foil construction. Anything else will self-destruct in minutes. I've had good results with caps from LCR and Arcotronics. German coilers seem to like the Wima FKP type. Dan McCauley used to use some General Electric snubber cap or other.

They ask you to go to other sites if they are out off stock, i emailed and and asked if they could sponsor a project me and some friends are doing, but unfourtanatly they were out of stock.

I think everyone has a right to sample, you just can't use it like your own personal garage. Off course you want to try it if you have never used them before, they are expensive.
