I've always understood that one of the main things in having a resistor over every cap is to make sure every cap is discharged, if you have a resistor over the whole bank then invidual caps can still hold a charge.

Yeah I think the balancing thing would only apply to resistors across your DC buss not an MMC. Across the whole thing is probably just for safety. I dont use them anymore.

The main argument for bleeder resistors across each cap in a series string is that "isolated" caps in the center of a string can still retain a charge, even though the entire string is paralleled by a single resistor across the ends of a string. With a single resistor across the entire string, the net voltage across the MMC terminals may be zero, but individual caps may still be charged. When each cap is shunted by its own resistor, no "floating charges" can remain.

Since Dr. Spark's entire MMC is enclosed, its unlikely that anyone is at risk from putting their fingers across a single "isolated" cap in the middle of the string.

I think the "voltage equalizing" aspect was debunked quite a while ago. I think it may have been Gary Lau who demonstrated that given the time constant of a typical MMC capacitor and a 10 meg resistor, and the typical operating frequency of a TC tank circuit, that any voltage equalizing between individual caps in a string would be minimal.

Regards,
Herr Zapp

Amazing - as always.

P.S. Thanks for the explanation about the bleeder resistors.

Cheers Dr. H.
