I've recieved 2 boxes of vacuum tubes (about 800 tubes) and I would like to make a small tesla coil with a 6146A. What would the optimal secondary specs. be?

6146A

Is that your tube? It's is only rated for 600V plate voltage and 20w plate dissipation so you can't just run it directly off of a mot (without a variac anyway). Also it is a pentode so you will have to either bias the extra grids or I think you can get away with just tying all the grids together. I have seen some small coils running small tubes and they work fairly well. As for optimum specs it’s really hard to say exactly. There is no real formula you can use to determine the most optimum design. I got my 811A tube coil working fairly well through a lot of experimentation. However since this will be a low power coil I would suggest small.. Maybe 0.5'' - 1 1/2'' diameter and 6-12'' winding length with 26-30 awg wire for the secondary. Shoot for 600-1000 turns. These however are only general guide lines.

I would suggest reading Steve Wards VTTC FAQ.. It covers the basics of what you need to know to design your VTTC.

I'de Like to use my 6146A or more of the (I have lots) like in the previous circuit, but I don't have any of the Mica capacitors. What in that schematic could be sub'd out or left out even if it dampened performance slightly?

You can use film-polipropilene. They run a bit hoter, but your VTTC will not be high power anyway...

How do you get the time to build all these beauties Christopher?
Do you have a materials source, or just fabricate all of them at home?

You have such nice coils, and it looks like you've done everything one can do!

Maybe you should try something new like fusors, since you have the time and money.

I love the finish cut on your plastics, are you using a very fine blade?

Also to get rid of the cloudiness of the plastics you can fire polish the ends by trailing the plastic in the wash of the flame. It works well, quick, and restores the transmission quality of the plastics. I am getting more into this now that I can cut, glue, and polish it so hopefully more of my projects will look pretty in the future too.
