"Police will have powers to frisk people they suspect of carrying lasers and those without reason to have them - such as educators, architects or astronomers - will be fined up to $5000"

Also..

"Class three and four laser pointers will be declared prohibited weapons and carrying them could attract a maximum penalty of 14 years' jail, he said."

There we go, the idiots have ruined it for us, keep them lasers hidden, or have a telescope handy if you are afraid of getting caught. TBH the Aussie government is starting to annoy me, what are they gonna ban next? SPOONS???

so how do i obtain legal permission to operate a low power laser out side of my house? (NO NOT POINTING UP INTO THE SKY, rather experiments with sending data or measuring distance).
I live in a non busy court and run it along ground level (so it would not even effect a car driver anyway).

I could take it to a nearby park if that is more legal? but i fear i will have 50 people thinking my wires are a BOMB!

Fortunately morons aren't able to build coilguns, tesla coils etc, because if they would able to, soon also these devices would be banned...

I'm surprised such a scarcely populated country can be so strict. And to think I've always had a wild-west impression of Australia.

Australian governement seems to be very strict, also concerning electrical repairs (voltages above 50V cannot be operated unless you are a qualified electrician)...

Legally, you'll need to define what "reason to have them" actually is. I'm a bit dubious over this whole article - can't see how it would be enforceable.

Now what defines someone as an astronomer? If Johnny uses high power lasers in his backyard as part of science experiments, does that constitute "good reason.?" And if not, why not Johnny if astronomers are able to use them? And so on . . .

Sounds like someone just blowing smoke . . .

Define educator.
With due respect to my teachers, parents and others, I think the person who has made the biggest contribution to my education is me.

Just another case where the minority (the people who decide it’s a good idea to shine it at a plane) affects the majority of the laser community.

I would tend to agreed with you partly however I don't think the police will.

Police don't interpret the law, they simply enforce it. Its up to the legal system (judge, lawyers, etc...) to make the charge stick once one does get charged.
