I too have been craving more power and I am now working on a DC resonant charging Tesla coil that will use a 5kva , 7200 volt distribution transformer with a voltage doubler .

Buy the way if this thing is rated at 5kva continuous, dose any one know what the absolute maximum output would be. I have already had it loaded to 7 kva running the old coil and it doesn't even get warm.

The usual rule of thumb for pole pigs is 3-4x the nameplate rating for arbitrarily short periods. 7kVA is just scratching the surface of a 5kVA pig. Pole pig thermal ratings take into consideration the possibility of being under maximum rated load all day in direct sunlight on a 100+ degree (F) day. With the usually low duty cycles of TC operation and the relatively nice conditions of most garages (perhaps not in mid summer, but...) pole pigs can really be pushed hard!

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

Thanks Arron, If it can do 10 kva for Tesla coil use I'll be happy.

I think you would have to worry more about the stress on your capacitors and thermal stress on your spark gap than the stress on the pole pig.

YouTube is Good smile

That's coolness. You've got some nerve running anything multi-kVA indoors, although as you say it's not tuned... I'd be too worried about the streamers "finding" things (e.g., appliances, wires in walls, ceiling lights, etc.).

You may find, too, that with >2kVA you've outgrown your <4" secondary.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

... I ran this coil off a 20A socket and used better wiring. The spark show was much more intense and the length of the sparks increase. I had an metal pipe in the ceiling that was being used as a strike target. It worked quite well!
