I tried a larger mix of about 50cc IPA and 50g ice shavings, both chillded to -17C. After leaving them in a thermos (vacuum flask), inside a foam box, inside my freezer for about an hour I measured a drop to about -20C, the mixture refused to get any colder.
I did a little asking around and finally found out that the flaw in this plan is not with the theory, it all holds true. It's with the application. While ice does melt slightly even when far below its melting point, the rate becomes so slow that even in a vacuum flask, more heat will have entered the system then the endothermic melting will have used.
Basically this works in theory, but the temp drop is so small its not practical for getting a good cooling bath via endothremics.
