I have designed and built partially my (first) SGTC. I faced the filtering problem and have taken a look at commercial line filters at RS and few other stores:

This 10A filter costs quite much for my budget. If I don't get such device from junkyard, I have considered could I build it myself. Is it possible to build it without weeks of work and with small budget? And if it is, is there any guideline? I have tried to use Google, but I obviously know the keywords :). My TC may be powered by 6 MOTs. There will also be huge ballast on primary side. I use SRSG.

i agree. i'd like to find some schematics for a quality line filter. but in the meantime, rainylk sells some reasonably inexpensive filters.

I would like to know how to make one too because I am debating if it would be easier and cheaper to make it yourself or just buy a cheep one like the eBay line filter.

Electronics goldmine usually has 10a filters for about $10, also, some computer power supplies contain modules rated for 10a. You may be able to find an old computer PSU that has exactly what you need.

Something like this?

Would this be the older types of PSU? How would you ascertain the rating? Would it be in a seperate
case or part of the circuit board?

Computer power supplies almost always have filters. most of the time they are on the board, but i have seen separate power input modules with the IBM style power connectors too. they are almost always rated at 10a. Look for the older AT style power supplies. If you can find a module this way, you could always take a smps with an integrated filter, and simply rebuild the filter on another board.

Thanks Chris, I am looking into this because I had a 2.2kVA variable transformer that shorted internally after running my coils through it a lot. I am not sure if this was caused by RF, perhaps unlikely, or to running power through at full tilt constantly. I don't use a variac anymore even though I have another little one I am saving for solid state stuff.
I will check out some supplies as suggested. Thanks.
