Hi All

Constructs a Doubler with a trafo he had here, follows the photos.
1206114373 1228 FT0 Pict0175

1206114373 1228 FT0 Pict0171

1206114373 1228 FT0 Pict0177

Look the MOT on the firt picture
I use for a Charging Choke,

I am using a Trafo of 2000 +2000 V = 4Kv For the entry of high voltage

And Doubler for 8kV, one MOT serves as Choke? Or will need two?

thanks

You will need two just for them to handle the voltage and to bring thwe shorting current down.

Great setup by the way!

I think we have two MOT, it is to limit the current, but the current output of the trafo is 300mA, it is 1.2KVA, but even then I put two to be sure. cheesey

Thanks tongue

----------------

Not Resist and tested my doubler today tongue
Using an MOT as CHOKE, the beginning was fairly, the arches appeared excellent, but after the third arc, gave a bloww, caps discharge violently in the output of the doubler. confused

After that BLOWW not stopped more than anything, was that see the smoke in CHOKE, isolation is broke. cry mad

Then tell me, two MOT as choke solve my problem?

I doubler 4KV @ 300mA shades

You used one mot as the choke? I know that two mot's can handle twice the voltage. Hooking the one mot as the choke is like pushing 4 times the rated voltage through it,or using a 4 pack mot stack. If two are used it will be like a 2 pack mot stack for each mot. And from what the internet says no one, including me,has had a failure with two mot's.

WAIT!
You do know that the chokes go AFTER the doubler, right? I cannot see them on that picture is why i ask...If you did not know,i will tell you right know(so i don't have to type later). The two mot's supplying the voltage is good and the doubler is good but after the positive output of te doubler is were the two chokes go.

Just asking, have you shorted the primary winding of the MOT?

The primary of the MOT was disconnected.

Oh so you have a tripler? Or quadruple?

well if you only have one mot powering it you only need one capacitor and one diode.unless you are using the circuit that has the smoothing cap and then it would take two caps. If you are using one mot as input and a doubler you should only need one choke because one mot choke can withstand 4000 volts easily.

I think it should be shorted so the core does not saturate nearly as easily but I may be mistaken, try to ask someone else
