Here's a good one: It shouldn't be too hard to get working and many beginners have successfully built it. However, it's powered off mains so PLEASE be careful with it. As Ultra7 said, I'd also recommend you a bit more reading before building your first coil.
Scopes aren't too expensive either, a used one can be found at ~100$ with some luck.

Where can I read up on this?
By powered off mains do you mean that it's hooked up to 120vac straight through?

Just surf around the net. Look especially in this forum and the old archives also. Other potential sources of information are also other coilers' homepages. Steve Ward and Uzzors have nice homepages for example. Seriously, I read about tesla coils months before building my first working SSTC.
It's not really straight on mains; the ac from mains is first full-wave rectified with a diode bridge and filtered with a capacitor. It gives out nice filtered DC.
