What do you think? If they would be filled with cold water, the spark gap would run cool? The temperature should not rise more than 100 C degrees until the water evaporates..

Can't be a spark gap, all the cans are only suspended with what looks like fishing line. I would think stopping the cans from moving is important for a spark gap!

The Franklin bells have it. This is the MM Franklin bells version running on between 10 and perhaps 50kV. They jump around like crazy, making lots of rattling cans sounds.
Here is a couple of seconds exposure and a night time exposure. I have also done a brief video but need to edit it.
