thanks and i know what you mean about winding in a cool enviroment but now i have just abot all the loose windings out so everything should work now (i hope)
Ive had the whole temp change problem (and I'm lucky enough to be winding on a lathe) thats why i give her a coat of varnish as soon as i have finished...
as for the slightly hight turns both my new 6 inch (yet to be run) and my old 4 inch plus all my old secondaries had a turn or two that sat higher than the rest.. i have never had a problem with it..

Yea, I also wound my coil by hand and it took me a while to do it. It annoyed me a lot though because half-way though the winding process I discover that somehow my wire has formed a kink while coming off the spool. Fortunately it isn't that bad but it’s still noticeable. Thankfully it hasn’t caused me any problems but just to be on the safe side you should probably tighten up your windings.
Kinks are very bad. Not as much for spark type coils, but if you have a self-resonant DRSSTC then its a MAJOR problem. What happens is that the kink is a weak point or discontinuity. Depending on the severity of the kink, the impedance of the resonator looks like the windings of your secondary ONLY up to that point where the discontinuity is. What this means is VERY BAD. The self-resonant system now thinks your secondary is only the size up to the kink, and then when it runs, you get your 1/4 wave peak voltage at the kink which leads to MOST SPECTACULAR catastrophic failure.
If your doing manual tuning, you can probably get buy if its not too bad, but if you have a self-resonant system, then you need to fix it. Easiest way is to cut it out, and then splice together the windings. Just make sure that splice is perfect as not to create another discontinuity.

for me kinking is not a problem because when i manually wind the coil if there is a kink i just unwind and then fix it and it always comes out flawlwss except this coil that is overlappinglike crazy but it seems that i got rid of all that so far so well see how it looks in a couple of days.
