yeah, I figured it out and KNO3 has more Oxygen for a given weight, 5 moles per 200g as opposed to 6 moles for 316 g. I still don't want to deal with shipping. I will check a landscaping store for KNO3 in fertilizer, and if they have sulfur for a reasonable price too I may go that route.
ramses
P.S.- you never ACTUALLY answered the question, just convinced me that KNO3 is better... but that's OK...

Dear god, Ammonium Nitrate and Aluminum powder is known as an insensitive high explosive "Ammon-Al"- yes, at one time it was used as rocket fuel but it was very unreliable. Mix the stuff with a per-Chlorate and you have a Tannerite. Not illegal - but a high explosive that is currently used in military/civilian demolitions.
As for Pot-Perm - KMnO4 is VASTLY more reactive than KNO3 - that is clearly tested and agreed with. I'd put 1 kG worth of KMn04 Flash powder against 1 kG of KN03 Flash any day. Yes, I hold a valid permit! Don't suggest you do it however....

ahhh... I gotta get me one of those...
BTW, i heard that Tannerite can be detonated by a .22 LR bullet... since you have a permit and all, i just thought you might, um, find that interesting...
I'm still gonna try the KMnO4, just to be stubborn. ramses

By all means, try. I'd be interested to know what sort of compositions work. Just note that sugar and KMnO4 is VERY friction sensitive and you can literally hear crackles as the mixture strives to ignite (and eventually does) when scraped by a screwdriver, etc. You may want to try MnO4 and iron powder. 54% KMnO4 and 46% iron powder is supposedly used as a priming composition and could be modified. I haven't gotten it to work in small quantities but I have a strong suspicion my KMnO4 is wet.
Be careful and post and results. I am now trying to locate the closest Tractor Supply . . .

I was just wondering how easily potassium permaganate (KMnO4) will react with liquid and solid fuels. I know it burns glycerin on contact after a short delay, but what about other liquids such as acetone, petrol (gas) or even molten wax, ground charcoal or any other practical fuel.
I am asking for several reasons:
1.rocket fuel 2. improvised fuse to ignite said rockets 3. substitute for glycerin in the spontaneous reaction that i may use to ignite thermite.
i would LOVE to use KNO3, but it is kind of hard for me to get at a reasonable price (stump remover costs more than KMnO4)
if anyone can suggest some fuels for said rockets that aren't that sensitive, please do.
thanks, ramses
edit: I completely ruled out KNO3 because of availability edit: substitute for glycerin is no longer needed.
KNO3 is easier to get than Permanganate. Permanganate is also quite dangerous if it is mixed with certain fuels. (mixtures should be treated as unstable or DANGEROUSLY EXPLOSIVE!)
Permanganate based flash powders are incredibly unstable and powerful and one should NEVER leave it stored for any length of time because of it's nasty habit of being hydroscopic --- then becoming self igniting (this would suck if it occurred at home). Also be aware that Potassium Permanganate is incompatible with strong acids such as Sulphuric acid and H202. (You risk an explosion)
Buying it can put you on a watch list! Propot perm is listed on the DEAs list of watched chemicals. These days Potassium Permanganate is listed as a precursor agent for the making of methamphetamine and chemical agents. -- You have been warned. It falls under the same category as white phosphorous.
