I was looking around for soldering iron stations when my usual non-linear browsing techniques brought me to discover these little guys.

Link2

I wonder if they would make inexpensive MMC's. . . .

For my 15Kv/60 mA NST, LTR sync cap should be around 20.2nF.
24 of these would give me 20.83nF with a rating of 24,000V.
I'd say that would be close enough for the girls I know. wink

Should I buy up some of them and give them a whirl, or do any of you have any experience with these guys?

they seem just fine the only thing i could possibly find wrong with them is the power rating could be to low to handle the 60ma from the nst but in that case putting them in mineral oil will solve that prob so give them a shot and see what happens

Sorry to hijack topic, but since it's the same question, would these capacitors be fine for MMC?

They are russian 4700pF (47nF) 2000V capacitors.

Based on the price of those capacitors I would definitely say they're at least worth a shot, and if they die you're only down $24. I really hope you try them since if they turn out to work well I think a lot of people here will be interested (me included).

As for that capacitor Tonic, I have no idea. I don't known how well film caps age, but if they've been removed from a Soviet ICBM then I wouldn't trust them.

well the only problem with those caps is that they are rated for 1000 volts DC.I dont know if ac would be much different but i used some caps for a small tesla coil and i later found out they were dc caps.I screwed them over...

They are brand new. But I'm going to forget about them, 4700pF is equal to 4.7nF, not 47nF as I have stated earlier. I found now those : Link2 33nF 1600VDC and 500VAC. What about them? And I have a question, which current has to be a factor in selecting capacitors, AC or DC?

hi ,dont know about those caps, but i have 300 of the famous blue caps as used by me and several other UK coilers. 0.068 nF 1600 volt. i have used these on my big 4 kw coil and as far as i know no one has ever had one fail so far due to cap breakdown. a few wiring failings but thats not the fault of the cap, more sloppy design and bad layout. you could have all 300 for 70 dollars plus postage. i would rather sell them all as one lot to reduce postage but will split them if no one wants to buy the lot. just brought 60 cd492's for my drsstc project so dont need these ones any more. they are unused and in sealed bags.
cheers

Well, dry run, the caps started to ionize the spark gap, but then I started getting arcing between the individual caps.
I guess I'll buy some mineral oil and try them immersed.
I'll keep ya'll posted.

Well, with the 24 array MMC made with these caps, I can honestly say, it is an utter failure.
Even immersed in mineral oil, the caps could not perform.

Chalk one up to experimentation.
