I'd stay away from brush-on varnish because unless you're really good at that (which I am not) it tends to get gloppy, sticky, messy, and as you rotate it, it picks up dust, and for me my hair is real long so that gets in there too. I prefer the spray Schellac in a few coats to keep the coil happy. On the tensioning the wire bit, just wait until its chilly outside then go back and tighten the winding. I do that when it gets chilly.
