Samba oil is rich in Napha - I can just imagine what might happen if / when your transformer was to get hot --- then burst the container. It can become increasingly flammable when hot Napha mixes with air --- it will be a combustible mess --- trust me. Vapourized Napha is extremely flammable! The oil itself is tame.... your right. I'd stick with Mineral Oil.. easy to get from the Drug Store.

I've done paraffin, it works but it's important that there are no air bubbles. Mineral oil would be my choice if I couldn't buy transformer oil. There is probably some around though, Shell Diala AX is pretty common if you've got a shell oil distributor around. A 5 gallon container is the smallest I've seen, but it's not expensive.

I've used mineral oil intended for hydraulics and it works fine. It has the right consistency and it won't go rank on you. Plus it's cheap and comes in reasonable sizes.
