I'm planning to wind a homemade HV transformer on a ferrite core. The problem is that there is not enough room for windings on the core and it will most likely just arc over from the winding to the opposite "leg" (where primary will be). I know that putting it in transformer oil would most likely be the solution but I can't find any transformer oil. Is there any other kind of easily available oil that is OK to use for HV transformers?

Vegetable oils, such as sunflower seed, rapeseed, and canola oils, are increasingly used in high voltage power transformers because of their desirable environmental and health and safety characteristics.
See the French electricity company EDF's news release "World's first vegetable oil filled transformer at 132,000 volts" here:
Here is a general paper discussing the commercial use of vegetable oil in transformers:
A number of patents have been issued for vegetable transformer oils such as these two here:

You can probably buy small amounts of transformer oil from local electric company (at least they sell it here without problem).
Vegetable oil works, but it must be for transformer so do not use cooking/food oil! It will insulate things nicely but it wont last very long, it deteriorates and runs away .

Depending on how much you need, you can get Mineral Oil at a pharmacy in a decent sized bottle. Its used as a laxative so you might get some looks buying a couple. Its not especially expensive.

Hey Harry - I think I will go for it ! I just heard that vegetable oils deteriorate over time [such as sunflower seed oil, the stuff you can buy for cooking], is this true?
